The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program was established in 1986 and made permanent in 1993. It is a federal incentive for private investors and developers to create new or preserve existing affordable housing nationwide.

Since May 2012, R4 Capital invested in more than $6.5 billion of LIHTC equity from 135 institutional investors by working with more than 150 developers to create and preserve more than 70,000 units of affordable housing across 49 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and territories.
